ROSATOM Asia, regional center of ROSATOM for Southeast Asia, joined Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS) as a Corporate Member. ROSATOM Asia will be the first nuclear energy company in the Association.

“Electricity consumption of ASEAN countries is growing drastically nowadays. Clean baseload electricity generated at nuclear power plants can contribute greatly to the sustainable development of ASEAN nations. Even though Singapore is not considering nuclear generation today, it should be aware of nuclear energy developments in the region. That is why we welcome ROSATOM Asia in SEAS”, said Edwin Khew, Chairman of SEAS.

ROSATOM will construct the first nuclear power plant (NPP) in Southeast Asia – two reactors at Ninh Thuan site in Vietnam. Furthermore, the company won tender for the preliminary design of the experimental 10 MW reactor in Indonesia. Apart from Vietnam, ROSATOM implements projects to construct 9 nuclear power units in Russia and 32 units throughout the world.

Head of ROSATOM in Southeast Asia, Egor Simonov, also emphasized the importance of the nuclear technologies for the region. "According to our estimates, about 20 GW of nuclear power capacities can be built in ASEAN. But it should be emphasized, that the atom is more than just energy: it can help to ensure sustainable development by dealing with key challenges, including the economic, environmental and social ones. Nuclear energy not only provides affordable baseload electricity generation without CO2 emissions, but also contributes to the economic development: it creates new workplaces and new technologies, giving a boost to R&D and education spheres as well. Furthermore, nuclear technologies are implemented in such important areas as medicine, agriculture, and water treatment”, noted Egor Simonov.

The Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS) was established in 2006. It is a non-government and non-profit business association that represents the interests and provides a common platform for more than 190 companies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and financial institutions to meet, discuss, collaborate and undertake viable projects together.
