The construction work on nuclear reactor building of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) project is likely to begin in September next.
According to sources at the Ministry of Science and Technology, a high-powered Russian team visited the RNPP project site last week and reviewed the overall preparatory works to start the construction work.
"Having a reactor building is very significant in any nuclear power plant project," Anwar Hossain, additional secretary of the Ministry of Science and Technology, told UNB.
The sources said Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone of the RNPP reactor building. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev may attend the programme.
Bangladesh signed a contract to appoint Russian state-owned nuclear agency Rosatom last year to construct 2400 MW RNPP having two units, each 1200 MW capacity, at a cost of $12.65 billion. Of the amount, Russia will provide $11.385 billion, or 90 percent of the cost, as state credit for the project.
