Concrete works of the first phase of the Internal Containment (IC) of reactor compartment at Unit- 1 of Rooppur Nuclear Power Project has been completed. The Internal Containment will be constructed in phases.

Yuri Koshelev, Chief Engineer of the project and Deputy Director for Project Management of Atomstroyexport (ASE) Branch in Bangladesh termed it as a milestone job for 2019 and informed that 1,145 cubic meters of high grade RCC has been used and the Reactor Building has ‘grown’ to 6+ meters in height. In 2020, it is planned to proceed with installation of the main equipment of reactor compartment at Unit- 1.

Internal Containment is an essential safety element of a nuclear power unit, which prevents release of radioactive substances into the environment, in case of any emergency. Internal Containment will be a cylindrical reinforced concrete structure with a semi-spherical dome, 1.2 meters thick and 73 meters high. Nuclear reactor and first circuit equipment of the NPP will be located within the Internal containment. The IC will be surrounded by another highly strong External Containment.

Rooppur NPP is being implemented by Atomstroyexport, engineering division of Rosatom state corporation of Russia, as the general contractor. The project will have two units, each with a generation 3+ Russian VVER-1200 reactor. Total capacity of the project will be2400 MW.
