Installation of the dome part of the outer containment of Unit 1 reactor building has started at the construction site of Rooppur NPP in the People’s Republic of Bangladesh (General Designer and General Contractor is ROSATOM’s Engineering Division). Works on the dome assembly and installation are carried out by specialists from the Trest RosSEM LLC Branch (being a part of the Rosatom Engineering Division). Installation of the lower tier of the outer containment dome has been completed.
The large-dimensioned structure having the weight of 200 tons and diameter of 46.3 meters was installed in the design position at a height of 48.8 meters. The structure was lifted by LR11350 crane (its lifting capacity being 1,350 tons), which took about five hours.
“The outer containment is one of the key localizing safety systems. It is a reinforced concrete structure protecting the reactor plant from external impacts, which is able to withstand an earthquake, tsunami or hurricane”, commented Alexey Deriy, ASE JSC Vice President - Director for Rooppur NPP construction project.
Apart from the outer containment, the reactor building is protected with the inner containment that was installed in 2021. A double containment is a distinctive feature of the Russian design of power units with VVER-1200 reactors, ensuring the highest level of safety.

Rooppur NPP equipped with two VVER-1200 reactors of the total 2400 MW capacity is being constructed under the Russian design 160 km from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in accordance with General Contract dated December 25, 2015. The Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors that had been successfully implemented at two units of Novovoronezh NPP was selected for the first NPP in Bangladesh. This is an evolutionary Generation III+ design which fully complies with all the international safety requirements.
